Summer Update

I have been working on a series called “Flow”. These are small works using dye, paint, inks, machine stitching and hand stitching with large threads and ceramic and glass beads. My plan is to exhibit them for my solo show next year. They will be matted and framed, but I am not sure I want to put them behind glass.

I have also been working on another series called Fragments of a Life. Some of the earlier pieces of this series may be used in promotional materials for “Select Collection” and I have decided to re-visit and add more collage work to this group.

Art Show And Sale At Carmi Public Library

I received an email last night from someone representing the Carmi League of Arts. Next Tuesday, June 22, they are hosting an Art Show and Sale in the basement of the Carmi Public Library. The sale is from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. I will be there with my work. Other entertainment for the evening is a concert in the gazebo by the library from 7:30 - 8:30. Come see the art and support your local artists.

Select Collection

I have been invited to be one of the featured artists for the Select Collection event to be held at the Evansville Museum of Art, History, and Science. This event is scheduled for this coming November. The theme of this year’s Special Collection is “Home and Apparel”. I am currently exploring ideas and ways of creating art around this theme. I will be printing much cloth this summer in preparation. Stay tuned.

Fiber: 2010 Ends Next Week

I just want to post a reminder about Fiber: 2010. The exhibit ends on May 14th. So if you are in the St. Louis/St. Charles, MO area, you simply must see this exhibit. There is lots of wonderful art to enjoy. It is at the Foundry Art Center in St. Charles, MO at the very north end of Main Street.

Arts In Harmony

Two day art fair, Arts In Harmony is coming up on May 1 and 2 in New Harmony, Indiana. Saturday hours are 10-5 and Sunday hours are 11-4. I will have small art pieces and ACEO’s (art cards, editions and originals) for sale at my booth under the big tent. Other items available will be my own hand printed designs on silk scarves, small bags and other dyed and printed items.

The annual art fair will feature painters, potters, jewelry artists, fiber artists, photographers, weavers and other arts. There is live music both days by various local and regional musicians.

I haven’t been one to jury into larger exhibits til this year. The past couple of years I have been participating in Southwestern Indiana Arts Council exhibits. But last year I had my eye set on jurying into the rather prestigious Form, Not Function at the Carnegie Center in New Albany. One of my pieces, “Weathered Places” was accepted into that exhibit that was up for viewing from January 8 to March 6. That one has now safely arrived home.

I have started traveling every other year to view the Quilt National exhibit that exhibits at the Foundry Art Center in St. Charles, MO. When I learned earlier this year that they would be sponsoring the Fiber: 2010 exhibit, I thought it would be fun to “hang” at the Foundry, so I sent in my images. “…But Words Will Never Hurt Me #2″ (Sticks and Stones) was accepted. That exhibit opened for viewing on April 2, 2010. The artists reception is this Friday, April 16th in conjunction with Missouri Fiber Artists (MoFA) Conference. The exhibit hangs until May 14th. I will be traveling to the reception on Friday.

Update, April 17, 2010…Wow what a great day in St. Charles, MO. The fiber exhibit is totally awesome and I would encourage everyone to see it. I was so awed by the work there…I wondered how did I get in this show? My friends reassure me, but still…I am not sure. I certainly am enjoying it though. The exhibit hangs until May 14th. It’s a beautiful exhibit with wonderful tapestries, pine needle weavings, layered and stitched pieces….I think there’s something for everyone. A cd catalogue will be produced. Look for it at www.missourifiberartists.com in upcoming days.

I met and had a nice visit with Bob Adams and his wife. I admire Bob’s textile work very much. He has been working mostly with a discharging technique but is doing some new work. See his work here.
I also attended a paper bowl making class that was delightful. I will post a picture when my bowl is finished…it’s drying right now.

Artist Statement

In creating art, I find the elements of nature to be some of the most interesting subjects in my environment. The colors, shapes, lines, and textures of trees, leaves, flowers, rocks, and even weeds are visually stimulating to me and I employ them liberally. I do most of my work in an abstract fashion with dyes and paints on cotton and silk. Creating my own cloth is where I prefer to start when creating a work of art. It is important to me that each piece is as original as I can make it. I do not usually work in realism; it is far more interesting to work in an abstract or suggestive mode, using the materials and elements to give impressions or allude to a theme. I hope to give the viewer pause as he/she ponders interpretations of my subject matter. “–Katherine Sands
